KAT5 AV Link Transceivers
AV Multi-zone Switcher

The KAT5 AV Link Transceivers will be a range of versatile units to enable the point to point interconnection and distribution of all types of Audio, Video and Computer Video signals around a building equipped with a structured wiring system based on Category 5 Cable.
The units will be available in three different form factors:

  • Self contained "Black Box" design for "Plug 'n' Play"
  • "Faceplate" design for permanent installation in a wall box
  • "Bare Board" Uncased printed circuit board for installation into OEM equipment and other equipment housings.
The "Black Box" and "Faceplate" versions will require no specialist knowledge on the part of the end user other than that normally required for interconnecting domestic Audio-visual and Computer equipment. To use the "Bare Board" version, the user will need knowledge of safe electrical practices and, depending upon the application, will need to know how to interconnect the board to their own equipment. The KAT5 AV transceivers can be used in conjunction with the KAT5 AV Switchers to enable a fully integrated multi-source multi-zone AV distribution system to be built to your exact requirements.

The KAT5 AV Link Transceivers enable the interconnection and distribution of all types of Audio, Video and Computer Video signals around a building equipped with a structured wiring system based on Category 5 Cable. To differentiate between the types of unit there will be a different colour of Power LED to identify the unit.

KAT5 AVS-TX  S-Video Transmitter  ( Yellow Power LED)
PSU Required at each end.
Stereo Audio and S-Video (Y-C) (Separate Luminance and Chrominance signals)
This version sends Left Audio, Right Audio, Video Luminance and Video Chrominance over a single CAT5 cable. The units is a self-contained box that is connected to the relevant source equipment e.g. Video Recorder, Satellite or DVD Player. Connection is by S-Video enabled SCART. The audio and video signals from the video recorder are fed into the KAT5 AVS-TX which sends them to either a KAT5 AV Switcher or the KAT5 AVS-RX connected to the SCART socket or AV inputs of a television set. This unit can also be used for 2 mono video sources.

KAT5 AVS-RX  S-Video Receiver  ( Red Power LED)
PSU Required at each end.
Stereo Audio and S-Video (Y-C) (Separate Luminance and Chrominance signals)
This version receives Left Audio, Right Audio, Video Luminance and Video Chrominance over a single CAT5 cable from either a KAT5 AV Switcher or the KAT5 AVS-TX. Connection is by S-Video enabled SCART with a user configurable link to enable auto switching of the TV's AV Input in either Normal or Widescreen Mode. This unit can also be used for 2 mono video sources.

KAT5 VC  Video Conferencing Unit  (Green Power LED)
PSU Required at each end.
This version is used for bi-directional Composite Video and Mono Audio.
This version sends mono audio and video over a single CAT5 cable in both directions. Connection to VC-TX and VC-RX is by means of RCA Phono Connectors. Typical applications include Video Conferencing and door entry systems.

KAT5 CCTV  (Orange Power LED).
PSU required at one end only if not powered from a central video switcher.
Audio, Video, Power and Control signal
This version sends mono audio and video over a single CAT5 cable. Power for the units can be fed from either end and is capable of supplying power to small PCB type security cameras requiring less than 250mA. Additionally there is provision for a control signal which can be used for a PIR Motion detector, a Doorbell press button or as a signal to operate an electrically controlled door. The PCB for the transmitter is also suitable for mounting in a standard electrical accessory box for wall mounting behind a suitable blank plate. Connection to CCTV-TX is hardwired for tamper proofing and connection to CCTV-RX is by means of RCA Phono Connectors

KAT5 VGA  ( Green Power LED) PSU Required at each end.
Computer Video (RGBS)
This version sends computer video over a single CAT5 cable. The KAT5 VGA-TX requires separate Red, Green and Blue Video signals and either Composite Sync (RGBS) or separate Horizontal and Vertical syncs (RGBHV). Input is via a 15HD VGA connector (female). Available with a loop though socket to allow the normal monitor to be connected or additional units to be daisy chained. If a unit with loop through is used without a monitor connected the monitor socket must be terminated with a dummy plug. The KAT5 VGA-RX outputs both composite and separate sync enabling most computer displays and projectors to be driven. Output is via a 15HD VGA connector (Female). Available with dual output sockets for driving 2 monitors simultaneously.

KAT5 RGB/DVD  ( Blue Power LED) PSU Required at each end.
RGB (RGBS) or Component (Y-Cr-Cb) Video
This version sends RGB or component video over a single CAT5 cable. The KAT5 RGB-TX requires separate Red, Green and Blue Video signals and Composite Sync (RGBS) or Component Video (Y-Cr-Cb) as output by the latest DVD Players. Input is via four RCA Phono Connectors. The KAT5 RGB uses the same printed circuit board as the KAT5 AVS but is fitted with components for 4 video circuits and has no provision for audio. The 4 pin Mini Din is not fitted. The KAT5 RGB-RX output is via four RCA Phono Connectors

KAT5 MCA  ( White Power LED).
Multi-Channel Audio
This version sends 4 audio signals over a single CAT5 cable. The KAT5 MCA-TX can be used for four individual mono signals, two stereo signals (LR) or Pro-Logic (LCRS). Input is via four RCA Phono Connectors. The KAT5 MCA uses the same printed circuit board as the KAT5 AVS but is fitted with components for 4 audio circuits and has no provision for video. The 4 pin Mini Din is not fitted. The KAT5 MCA-RX output is via four RCA Phono Connectors

KAT5 AV Multi-zone Switcher

The KAT5 AV Switcher is of modular construction.
There will be two types of interface cards.

Input Cards - These will be available in the same variants as the KAT5 AV Transceivers and will receive their input signal via CAT5 cable. There will also be a stripped down version of each input card to receive the input signal in its native format e.g. Composite Video and Stereo Audio. This will allow a piece of equipment such as a satellite receiver located centrally with the switcher to be connected without the additional expense of a KAT5 transceiver.

Output Cards - These will be available in the same variants as the KAT5 AV Transceivers and will send their output signal via CAT5 cable. There will also be a stripped down version of each output card to send the output signal in its native format e.g. Composite Video and Stereo Audio. This will allow a piece of equipment such as an Video Recorder located centrally with the switcher to be connected without the additional expense of a KAT5 transceiver. Some Audio capable versions of the Output cards will have the option of an onboard power amplifier to drive loudspeakers installed throughout the house for Whole House Audio.

Effects On Other Systems

There should be no effect on other systems if installed and operated in accordance with the supplied instructions. Whilst as much care as possible has been taken with these designs, due to the complex and diverse nature of the equipment connected by the user it is impossible to guarantee that all equipment will operate correctly in every case.
